Drug Dropoff Day this weekend

Norfolk OPP and Shoppers Drug Mart in Simcoe want to help local households get rid of unwanted prescription drugs.Police encourage residents to purge their medicine cabinets of unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs. When expired and unused prescription medication is left unattended, it can lead to prescription drug abuse.Prescription Drug Drop-off Day in Norfolk will be held this weekend. It is an important public safety initiative to encourage residents to dispose of old and unused prescription medication in a secure, environmentally-friendly manner.“The purpose of the Prescription Drug Drop-off Day is to reduce access and availability of prescription medications to those who should not have them,” Insp. Joe Varga, head of the Norfolk OPP, said in a news release. “This provides a convenient opportunity for all residents to safely and anonymously dispose of outdated or unused prescription medications.”This year’s Prescription Drug Drop-off Day will take place Saturday, May 11 in the Staples parking lot at the intersection of the Queensway and Norfolk Street North in Simcoe. Professionals will be on hand to greet the public between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon.People wishing to dispose of outdated, unused and unwanted prescription drugs may do so anonymously without having to get out of their vehicles.The Controlled Drug and Substances Act (CDSA) prohibits anyone from possessing prescribed medication without a prescription.It is a criminal offence to offer or sell a prescribed medication to another person.Purchasing another person’s prescribed drugs is also illegal.Prescription drug abuse is the use of prescription drugs for non-medical purposes. Recent studies indicate 24 percent of teens reported misusing prescription medications at least once within the previous year. Most of the teens took the medication from their family home.Crime Stoppers of Haldimand and Norfolk will be holding a Shredding Day at the same time and location on Saturday.Members of the public are invited to take personal and financial documents to the location where the items will be shredded in the Norfolk Disposal mobile truck.
